I am Barb! As a Registered Social Worker at the Child and Adolescent Family Centre of Ottawa, I provide therapy primarily to children ages 5 to 13 as well as their parents/caregivers. I view my role as a support to individuals and families to collaboratively explore, navigate and develop healthy skills and strategies. My approach is client-centered with a focus on empowering individuals through exploration of strengths and challenges.
Using an integrative and holistic approach, I provide therapy to those experiencing separation/divorce, bereavement, chronic illness, depression and anxiety, low self-esteem, relationship problems and adjustment to major life transitions. I have extensive experience supporting families of children with special needs (Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down Syndrome, etc.) as well as various medical conditions.
My focus and training include various therapeutic approaches such as emotion focused therapy (EFT), cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), mindfulness based therapies, trauma informed and strength based recovery models and solution focused approaches. I am certified with the Grief Recovery Institute and have added experience in supporting individuals coping with grief and loss including the death of a child, infant loss and still birth.
I have a Master of Social Work degree from McGill University. I am registered with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers and the Ontario Association of Social Workers. I have been practicing social work in Ottawa for more than 25 years and have extensive experience facilitating groups for both children and adults.
